Mail has stopped working
I have been using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 for the past 6 years and have not has any problems. Recently however, the users complained that the system was running very slowly. Since we never shutdown the system unless there is a scheduled hardware maintenance or some other pending emergency situation, I shutdown the system and powered off the machine. I then restarted the system and everything appeared fine except when logging on as root I got and I am still getting the message "/var/spool/mail/root : input/output error”.

When I checked the logfile /var/log/boot.log.1 I saw the following message (which occurred during the boot-up process):

“/usr/sbin/sendmail: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/ file too short”

This particular file has a size of 0 and has no permissions.

Is there an easy way to recover this file? I have never backed-up the system libraries and the only other source would be my original Linux distribution CD.

Since the mail is no longer functioning correctly I don’t get any output mail from cron jobs anymore. Apart from the mail problem everything else seem to be working fine.

This could be the first of many problems to come. You might simply want to do a full data backup and then reinstall your complete system from scratch.
