Mail Client Setting
 

Hai All,

Could you please tell me how to configure mail in Linux? Let me describe a little . I want to check my hotmail account using any mail client in Linux .I am using Linux 7.1 Redhat. And I use Gnome. But I have installed KDE too. So please tell me any mail client in KDE or GNome which can be used for checking the hotmail account.

I dream about checking the hotmail account in linux just like what I was doing with Outlook express in windows. Please help me as I am a newbie planning to change my OS from Windows to Linux.

Try sylpheed, its good.

Also I heard evolution is good and it usually comes with gnome, kde has kmail (iirc).

All of these programs are able to fetch mails from a pop account.

Since I have no idea how hotmail lets you fetch mails I assume they use pop, so I hope this was usefull advice :)

Thanks for your reply. But Inoutlook express, I used to set the hotmail in http account and not pop account. So what should I give for incomming mail server and sendmail server? I am a bit confused. Please tell me whether the Evolution is there in 2.4.2 kernel (seawolf) version gnome?

you can not connect to hotmail afaik as it's a microsoft thing so they invented their own secret ways to use it. sendmail is an smtp server, so you should use whatever you had for that (outgoing server outlook calls it i think) incoming would be either op3 or imap server, not hotmail

Could you please tell me whether the kopete mail client which can configure the hotmail account nicely is built in rpm with RH 8.0? And is there any body who have done the configuration succesfully to set hotmail in that? If yes, please help me to do that. Hoping help from you. Please help me as I am a newbie.

hotmail can not be accessed without outlook. that's the point of it. mail clients like gaim can recieve notification from hotmail when you have new mail but you would still nbeed to log in to hotmail directly to get the mail

There is a way to get your mail out of an Hotmail-account, you could use Gotmail. With this utility you can let your mail get in to your mbox, filter it trough procmail or have the mails redirected to a 'normal' account. Get it at http://www.nongnu.org/gotmail/
You can't send your mails trough Gotmail, but if you configure Kmail (my choice) or Mutt for instance to send your reply's trough your normal SMTP-server.
