Mail

I need to setup a mail server such that email can be sent and retrieved from outside the domain where the server resides. What is the best mail server for this purpose?

I want to be able to prevent people not authorized from using the mail server to send mail as well.

THanks,

The most popular (and very good) is postfix. I don't recommend sendmail (very big and had many security problems). Postfix comes with most distros.

OK just so I am sure....

Will Postfix:

1 - Act as a pop server repository for email retreival outside the domain of the Postfix server?
2 - Allow only authorized mail on the outbound side so that it does not become a spam source?
3 - Ensure the mail sent via it from the mail clients outside the domain, look like they were initiated by the Postfix domain?

Thanks,

Yes. It can do it.

Yes. Check the configuration after installing and when it's done test the server before putting it fully online (configuration mistakes happen...).

Not sure what you mean. If you ask if your postfix server will be in the message header when user has it as SMTP server - the answer is yes.
