Just installed Linux for the first time. Been using Windows for so long this is going to take some getting used to. I'm wondering if the issue of using MagicJack on this OS has been resolved.

There are several threads about Magic Jack on LQ.

I won't post a link to a specific one because they name different distros and you didn't specify your distro. You can use the forum search tool at the top of the screen to find them and pick the one(s) that you think will help you the most.

Short answer: Magicjack doesn't support Linux although they have been promising 'real soon now' for more than a year. You might be able to get it to run in a Windows environment in Linux but that can be a bit tricky to get going. You might also be able hack the keys out of the dongle and use them to configure a VOIP app, but, again, that's not for the timid.

There is a competitor that isn't that much more expensive but is self contained and uses an ethernet port for about the same annual fee.

Also, since magicjack sells a version for MAC, and Mac's use a version of BSD, why wouldn't those models work on Linux?

Yeah, thumbs down to MagicJack for promising Linux support for about 3 years now...and never coming through. I think they officially admitted that they are not going to support it on Linux now. My MagicJack expired about a month ago, and I didn't renew, because I want to get Windows off of my 'puter, and MJ was the only reason I was hanging on to Windows- now I can obliterate it! I'll gladly pay a little more for a service that supports Linux- although I haven't researched the other providers yet.

There are one or two people out there who claim to have gotten MJ to work under Linux- but IMO, it's too much trouble. This technology is supposed to make our lives easier...not harder. I'll go for one that supports Linux.
