Madwifi in Debian Etch

Trying to get a pcmcia card (WG511T Netgear) working in Debian Etch and I am running kernel 2.6.18-6-686 and have installed wpasupplicant, wireless-tools, hostapd and bridge-utils. I have downloaded the source for madwifi v0.9.4 from the madwifi site and was trying to run 'make' from the root shell and keep receiving this error:

/Desktop/madwifi-0.9.4# make
/bin/sh: cc: command not found
Makefile.inc:81: *** Cannot detect kernel version - please check compiler and KERNELPATH. Stop.

Everything I see on how to correct this error relates to Redhat and not Debian. Does anyone know how to correct this error or have a link that might assist me in installing my WG511T card. I might mention that I am trying to install this on an IBM ThinkPad R40 laptop.

I currently dont have the pcmcia card installed so I didnt post the lsmod or lspci in this question. If I need to, just let me know and I will take care of that. I know this card has worked in Kubuntu before.
