madriva 06

I'm having a problem booting into gnome, everytime i load it up it goes into the command prompt and asks for me to logon, i logon successfully, but i'm just not sure what to do in order to get into the actual gnome operating system, any help would be appreciated. And also any help on how to auto logon would be appreciated as well.

After you login, can you start Gnome or KDE with the command: startx ?
If not, you may need to configure the video settings with the command: XFdrake

When i do startx as a command i get this error , execve failed for /etc/x11/x (errno 2), and XFdrake as a command doesn't do anything....so i'm not sure what to try next.

Running XFdrake as root ( su - ) doesn't work at all or doesn't make any changes?

smity1000 12-13-2005 09:31 PM

Yeah for some reason it doesn't work at all unless i'm just dumb and don't know what i'm doing which i think that might be the case..but yeah when i type it XFdrake it just says its a wrong command or prompt. Just in case you need the specs, AMD athlon 2500+ 512mb ddr, 64mb ati video card.

did you change the video card settings when you installed? Did you select a video card driver other than the one that mandriva selected for you? or did you leave it as standard?

smity1000 12-13-2005 09:37 PM

Yeah i left the video card settings to standard, what i might do is simply reload it and do it slower since i was in rush to use it and i may have overlooked some of the settings.

Make sure you go into the video card setup and make sure it says that the x server will start on boot.

I had this exact problem, and running XFdrake solved it - cool!
