If you look at my "sig", you'll see a link about reading man pages. There's shit loads of stuff in them, but that's why, when I found the link in the first place, I copied it to my sig - because I'm too stupid to get my head round the "technospeak".

But the link gives you a nice breakdown, so they make much more sense.

The unmount thing would be something like

umount /dev/hda1
there's man pages for mount and umount (if you've got them installed - normally done as default if my memory is correct).

Oh, or maybe you could try mandrake. version 10 official is now available, and while some people turn it off, I've never had any problems with the "supermount" facility. It seems to enable me to just use konqueror to go straight to file:/mnt/windows/WINDOWS and I just dig around to find what I want.

Good to see that you've mastered the "tried and tested" n00b method of sorting problems out with the "old re-install" technique :D
