Unhappy Mad about Mandrake Internet configuration

Hello everybody.

I am programmer with more than 10 years of professional experience (lastly with J2EE). Now I want to learn Linux (which I don't know at all). But I am about to give up.

Since I am a complete "newbie", I have downloaded one of the "easiest" distributions: Mandrake. I have installed it (with KDE). But I am not able to configure my Internet connection.

I have Internet by cable. I have two network cards but I only use one of them. Mandrake recognizes both cards (and I don't know how to disable one of them).

I attempt to configure my Internet connection by using Mandrake Control Center but I have tried a lot of configurations and it simply doesn't work. When I click "Connect" button, one of my network cards seems to be sending and receiving data from the Internet, but, after a while, a "Connection failed" message appears. And I cannot see pages with Mozilla.

(By the way, I don't know where to put my DNS configurations. Mandrake Control Center seems not to need them)

I have tried with the wizard and the expert mode and I don't know what to do. I really want to learn Linux (I have thought about programming all my Java stuff in Linux in order to get used to this operating system) but now I am desperate.

Can somebody help me?

Thank you in advance,

Vicent Palasi

Unhappy

Good to read that I am not the only one having problem getting
Mandrake 9.1 to log on the internet with a cable connection.

My problem is a bit different, the control center actually finds a lan card, it even gives me my IP address (I checked with my provider)
but WHEN it connects to the internet it does so at 14.4 k !!!

I had a Cardinal modem 12 years ago that was faster than that !

Anybody around here an expert at getting Mandrake 9.1 std
on a cable connection ?

-thanks !
