Lynksys Connection to a Windows Router

I have Ubuntu(k)partitioned with WindowsXP home edition(sp3) on a Dell Dimension 9100 MN: 0x8582 512mb RAM; NVIDIA geForce 7600 GS 266Mhz; Intel Pentium 4 630 CPU 3 Ghz. I'm using Lynksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter /Speed Booster MN:WPM54GS and have downloaded NDISWrapper and NDISGTK. I have no clue what to do now to connect to the internet. Please Help a.s.a.p - I'm always logged on.

You have the card installed already? Or are you asking how to install the card?

I have the WMP54G and ubuntu picked it up straight away, as the chipset is supported, upon installation, then it was just a matter of setting my network settings.

The card is installed already.I am using Windows for now. I've tried different sudo's to try to install Ndiswrapper, but no dice. I have Ndsgtk on a Cd-r and it loads on Ubunbtu, but not sure how to get the Ndiswrapper on there. I amout of cd's to make a bootable cd with it if thats what I do need to end up doing. Unless someone can share a smarter sudo- egh. This is so frustrating.

I'm confused. Do you have Ubuntu with windows in a virtual machine, windows with Ubuntu in a VM, or a dual boot situation?

If Ubuntu is running in a windows VM, windows may not allow it to see some of the hardware. Have you tried asking on the Ubuntu forums and mail list?

After re-reading your post, I'm still confused about the router. You say it's a windows router? Is it on a separate computer? Since you're using a PCI linksys I'll assume this is a desktop and not the machine the router is on. Is that correct?

You might also try googling for "WPM54GS" to see if you find anything appropriate.

If you still need more help, please post a reply with more information such as router model, whether the Linksys PCI card works in another computer (yeh, that's a hassle - old pro at that), and any info about the cards configuration.

I'm not familiar with Ubuntus' methods but there should be a file called "ifcfg-wlan0" somewhere in /etc. Post the contents of that also.

Ok I have decided to just forget the whole thing- This is far beyond my knowledge of computers to work on. Ubuntu is partitioned with windows....I can choose which one to boot at start up. The router is on a separate computer, and yes this is a desk top as well as the computer that the router is connected to. I already listed the router info- Lynksys wireless router w/Speedbooster model Number WMp54GS....and what do you mean google 'WMP54gs" to find anything appropriate? Lynksys works fine- I am using it now as I am typing. It does work on another computer. I dont see how that I relevant to the issue. And where might I find this "IFCFG-WLAN0" file?

That means to go onto the web with a web browser, enter WMP54GS in the search box, and visit the links

So you can connect to the internet from windows but not from Ubuntu, is that correct?

In windows, find the settings for your network, ESSID, encryption type (WEP, WPA-PSK, none), the encryption passphrase and any other information windows displays. These are for your own use setting up in linux, DO NOT post them on the forum. I need to do a little research about that card and will get back to you later.

Ok weill do thank you this seems more helpful than what others are trying to have me do-

After researching the Linksys WMP54GS, I several links using google search for "WMP54GS". The one titled "Dossys' Blog" would probably work for you. He gives fairly thorough description of how he solved this problem. Although his system is Debian, Ubuntu is based on Debian so should work for you.

If you have any problems following his instructions, or any confusion about what to do, reply to this thread and we'll try to provide more help.
