Hi eliot2100,

Welcome to LQ.

My first question would be that if you are new to linux, why did you decide to start with Arch ? It requires a significant amount of work to get a full system configured and although it is now my system of choice, I wouldn't recommend it as a first linux experience. That said, if you do insist on starting with it, confirm and we'll help you as well as we can.

Secondly, when speaking of partitioning, you are using terms that suggest you are thinking of using lvm (logical volume management) for your system. Any particular reason ? Again, although it is certainly an option, it is not a common one for a simple laptop installation.

Again - please elaborate a little on your objectives and we can help you along.
