Hi, I installed the new ubuntu 12.10 for my mom but the unity desktop is really bad for her to use, so I installed Lubuntu via command. Logging into that desktop is awesome and everything seems to work much better. However I can't get her DVDs to play, when I insert the disc it won't do anything at all. I tried installing VLC due to error by movie player needing something installed which I couldn't find. Now VLC player won't play them either. any ideals how to get this to work? by the way, they play fine in unity or default session. thanks.
additional information. I started a DVD with Movie player and it opened and started player. I got this error... Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed.

Reason: To help troubleshoot what's going on.
Try starting VLC from the command line and then opening the DVD, then post any resulting error messages here, making sure to enclose them in "code" tags, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" down there at the bottom of the Quick Reply window.
Here is the error with VLC after opening it in the terminal and playing the dvd....
libdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00fe0000. Regions: 1

Go in VLC settings and change video to X11 backend. If it does not work, try other backends too. It will be slower, but might work. Also be sure the css lib is installed (look in your favorite packages manager).

I wouldnt be installing a beta release OS for any normal user.
If youarent goign to use unity/ubuntu desktop, removing it all would probably be a good idea-
Warning! Directions are for 12.04 (link to directions for earlier versions). It should work with 12.10, but you never know.....

You dont have libdvdcss. Directions for how to add it here (again, its for versions up to 12.04, but should work with 12.10)
thank you, I'll just download the most stable release of Lubuntu and go from there. Then I'll follow the directions to make sure it works. thanks for the help. BTW that new ubuntu 12.10 sucks bad! I downloaded antix Linux just to try it out on an old desktop, after waiting an hour for it to download, it disapeared when I closed firefox. I reopened firefox and when to downloads. Now it's just grayed out to open in folder. I mean it's no longer there! Much more problems too. It's really bad. sorry developers, I do admir you guys, and I know you will get it right before the final release.
