Lubuntu "An error occured while loading the archive"

Hello and thanks for being here for us.
I have an old computer that I loaded windows 7 on and it ran badly (2gigs ram). I had an xp disk and read that I could load Lubuntu, get rid of 7 and then load xp. I successfully loaded Lubuntu and got rid of 7. When I try to run the xp setup.exp I get the above mentioned error message. I appreciate any help to solve this problem.

Hi...

Welcome to the forum :)

This is my opinion but probably the easiest way to make this work if you want to dual boot both XP and Lubuntu is to first save all the files that you want to keep, then wipe the hard drive with a program like DBAN. If you still have the Windows 7 restore partition (if applicable) and want to keep it, DON'T use this method to wipe the disk, use another method that won't disturb this partition! After that's completed, install XP from scratch first, then use this guide to install Lubuntu after that. During setup, you can tell the installer how much space you want for each partition. :)

Regards...

You did mean "setup.exe", correct? I'd expect that if you are starting the xp CD from within Lubuntu which won't do what you want.
Did you see an error code number with the message?
The link below has a brief explanation on the cause of this and several methods on repairing it which all require the ability to boot the system??

Maybe I am not clear or I don't understand. Here's the situation. Windows 7 is completely gone from the computer. I now only have Lubuntu as the OS. I put my XP hologram full install disk in the drive, click on accessories, click on disks then on cd/dvd drive. I click on contents and it seems to show the contents of the disk. I then click on setup.exe. Archive manager opens and starts to read setup.exe then stops with the message "an error occurred while loading the archive". There is no message number. I don't want to dual boot all I want to do is install XP on this machine but I can't seem to get it to read the disk so it can be installed. I'm probably doing something dumb or don't have something installed in Lubuntu. Thanks for any help.

I think the fact that you installed Ubuntu first led us to believe that you wanted to dual boot.

If you have the XP install disk and just want XP, simply insert it into the drive and reboot - should work for most machines. You "might" have to set the DVD drive as the first boot device in BIOS so that it does not boot straight to the hard drive. Once it boots to the XP CD/DVD, just follow the installation directions and tell it to use the whole hard drive, thereby removing Ubuntu.

And to be complete, the error message "an error occurred while loading the archive" is because you can't run the setup.exe that way. Who ever gave that info is in error. The "archive manager" is simply trying to uncompress the file, not run it to install XP
