Hi Lonnie, welcome to the forum :)

You will want the .deb package.

If you would, please open a terminal and run the following command...

Code:

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && \
chmod +x wireless-info && \
./wireless-info

Then navigate to the location of the text file the script created and post the results (or a link to them) in your next reply. :)

If you are having problems with that release, it should not be unexpected as the system you are using is still in the test phase, that's what the 'beta' means so by downloading and installing it you have volunteered to test it for the developers. Problems like that are to be expected with a 'beta' release and the primary reason for an early release is so the developers can be informed and hopefully correct problems before the final release. So if you are unable to resolve it with help from members here, you might be better off waiting until the final release next month.

Hi...

Open "wireless-info.txt" and copy the entire contents and paste them in your next post.

Technically you could get either. You can use alien to convert .RPM to .DEB.

$ sudo dpkg -i <package>.deb
(to install the package, might need to repeat after next for success)

$ sudo apt-get -f install
(to grab any deps not installed)

HTH

Looks like it can see some networks. :)

Can you explain more of how you're trying to log into your network? What are you seeing or not seeing? If you've tried to log in, what happened?

Regards...

Code:

ip a;ip r
are always good 'sanity check' info to post. (ping -c 1 8.8.8.8 not needed here;))

Note that the GENERAL.DEVICE: wlp2s0 has *NO* IP4.ADDRESS !!!
Maybe some if?config/dhcp [Ubu=Deb] '?stuff?' is missing / not setup!!
(I don't know the GUI config things, sorry)

Yes, there's 2 'place concepts' for getting 'app' from: [distro] repo or [app] 'download'
(I think 'repo' is usually 'better', but I'm 'Newbie' on this topic. Is skype ok now?)

lonnie2755 03-25-2017 08:16 PM

ok ardvark71 i'm seeing a connection wireless and network when i click on the network icon on the menu bar when i click on it i click on one of my wireless connection which are "ctl and lonniehome " but it doesn't connect to wireless it goes to the ether net cable and if the cable isn't plugged in it times out looking for the network i have to have both networking and wireless check marked or nothing happens no connection. but the good thing is that i'm still able to use the laptop which is a Samsung nc-10 netbook so far everything else seems to be working fine i can plug in my USB DVD burner/player and it plays music and dvd's in fact I've been using the laptop to communicate with you through the hard line i'm not a programmer and this Linux stuff is new to me altho I've read a lot on it as to why it says "systemctl status NetworkManager" i'm not sure i wish i knew someone local that could help here in the Boise Idaho area

Jjanel 03-25-2017 09:51 PM

Hi... ardvark71/someone will likely be back later & will likely get it working!
It might be useful to post the output of the [terminal] command he asked
(plus my ip a;ip r which will replace the missing info where ifconfig/route not found)
so they'll have more info with which to help. (I don't have Linux wifi either, sorry)
Also, is your wired/wifi a static or dynamic 'dhcp' IPaddress? (I didn't see dhcp in report)
Here's a 'sample' I found (different device, so details not relevant! .conf)
It looks like #13 post might be missing the later half of the info, between:
##### NetworkManager profiles ###########
and
########## wireless info END ############
(you can edit prior posts, rather than reposting the whole big thing)

Anyway, best wishes... yea, Linux 'puzzles' take some 'patience'
p.s. did you get skype working yet?

Yes, that's it, but lines appear truncated. Also, right after a reboot may reveal more.
You can edit / clean-up the formatting via 'CODE' tags, to make it look nicer.

The 2 other things (IF you still have the time&patience:eek:): my
ip a ; ip r
and the (probably) missing later half of the long output in #13 earlier.

if you read #16 you'll see that i'm not a programmer and i wouldn't know where to start lol but if someone was to slowly walk me through it with the correct information and where to put if that's possible

Jjanel 03-26-2017 12:30 AM

Oh, sorry... I didn't mean to get into obscure tech stuff... I was mostly tidying-up what you ran (from the terminal) in #2/#13... Mainly copy&paste into LQ posts ('Edit' LQ button)
I did add one more command line, in the box in #15, to replace the "ifconfig" & "route" info (which got the "command not found" in #13; your new/beta version may have omitted those 'old' commands, which have been replaced by the 'ip' command).
Yea, unfortunately, OLDme CLI is the opposite of current real-world GUI users...sorry.
p.s. not that you want it, here's a doc on CLI ;) Anyway, I admire your patience!
Oh, if you click on that link about 'CODE', you'll see how it's done, in LQ posts, like:
[CODE]ip a;ip r[/CODE] (the 'noparse trick' is invisible here!) It took me a while to learn this LQ formatting.

Hi...

Hmmm. So when you try to connect to your wireless network without the ethernet cable plugged in, does it just time out or do you get some kind of error message? If so, what is it? Also what brand and model (and model number) is your router and/or modem?

Please try this: Disconnect your system from the ethernet cable and try connecting to "lonniehome." If it fails to connect, please open a terminal and post the results of...

Code:

dmesg | grep -iC 3 "wlp2s0"
If that comes up with nothing, just try...

Code:

dmesg
Then plug the ethernet cable back in and post the results.

EDIT: Please also include the information Jjanel has requested.

Thank you for posting the results of "systemctl status NetworkManager," it appears Network Manager is up and running, hopefully working correctly.

If you can't get a resolution here, perhaps someone from the Boise LUG can give you a hand. I'm not sure if they've found a meeting place yet, though. :)

Regards...

Hi...

Thank you again for posting the readouts. I think the above might lend a clue as to the nature of the problem but the solutions I'm finding for at least two of the errors are pretty much all over the map. Just to be clear: There may not be any easy solution to this, if any, so you will need to get your "hands dirty" and research and experiment. A few solutions you can try...

1. Try changing the channel on the device your seeking to connect to, whether your router or modem, as mentioned at post #6 here.

2. See if you have more than one wireless manager running (which I doubt) by running this command...

Code:

ps afx | grep -i net
3. You might try using a earlier distribution of Lubuntu, such as 16.04 or 14.04, although the latter is about to reach it's end of life. These will have different kernel versions, which might make the difference.

4. You can look through my Google searches below and see if you can find any additional solutions...

https://www.google.com/#safe=strict&...the+AP+ath5k&*

https://www.google.com/#safe=strict&...UTH_LEAVING)&*

Other members may have additional ideas or solutions. Let us know how it goes. :)

Regards...

Hi...

Although I could be wrong, that looks ok.

Thanks for the ip a and especially the ip r!

Hmmmm... this is a 'tough one', but probably will turn out to be some 'basic glitch'
(like: [randomly...] no encryption, US, ?wpa_supplicant?, duplicate-of-enp3s0 subnet, ...)
Can you find the 192.168.x.y address this wifi has on another OS/device? (..0.y might be 'BAD' dup/sameSubnet! Is enp3s0 CABLE plugged into SAME routerBox which provides wifi???)
**>>>>** Have/can you try rebooting withOUT wired-ethernet connected? ?? **<<<<**
'In desperation' (&since I think [2nd] half of #13 is missing) maybe repost #13 and/or rerun:
./wireless-info (better yet, rerun&post after rebooting withOUT wired-ethernet connected!)
(-after- you generate that #9 "wireless-info.txt",
by: ./wireless-info [OR even, without chmod: sh wireless-info]
THEN you can plug in cable & post it, OR even reboot [w/cable] and that .txt file will still be there [with info from being run withOUT enp3s0 cable] ! )
...I hope you can figure out what I'm trying to write here...if not, ardvark can explain MUCH better;)

yes, I think the 'key' info is:
[ 169.038649] wlp2s0: deauthenticating from 40:4a:03:df:42:c3 by local choice (Reason: 3=DEAUTH_LEAVING)
BUT I don't know this 'stuff' well enough to solve it, sorry.
Here's a 'clue' for ardvark/other LQ'ers (from web-search of: DEAUTH_LEAVING)
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164279

p.s. Did you get skype working? OR do you still need help on skype?

Hi...

I'm sorry, at this point, I don't know what else to suggest. You can either work through the other suggestions I offered in post #28 or see if someone from the Boise LUG can offer you a hand.

Another suggestion would be to take your system to a reputable computer repair shop or technician where you live that has experience in diagnosing Linux issues.

Regards...

Hi... ham!!

IF you boot withOUT the ethernet cable, by any chance, does wifi work then?
(can you find the 192.168.x.y IPaddress which anything else gets -from wifi-?)

Assuming not, could you run that `wireless-info` script again,
after this reboot -withOUT ethernet cable plugged in-.

Then, you can plugin the cable (give ethernet a moment to come up, or just reboot)
and then, carefully copy&paste the new (&complete) .txt output (in new post)
(that is, the .txt from the script run after fresh boot, *with no internet access*,
even tho enet is now in use. Of course, here, don't run the script a 2nd time, which would overwrite the .txt file just captured above, with no enet cable and no internet.
The .txt file, of course, 'survives' a reboot; `ls -l` will show that via time)

Hopefully, this will provide enough clean&precise data for someone to see what is happening with the wifi
(without the enet=cable 'in the way').

ok

I've tried that at least a dozen times ok so here's the 65 million dollar question would i be better off trying a different distro ? and what about mint/cinnamon or a distro that would work with a samsung nc10 netbook when. I got up this morning i found that there were updates so i ran them in hopes that they would fix the problem but they didn't fix the problem sense i'm not a programmer and the other part for these 2 questions is i'm on a fixed income i need to keep the repairs cheap as possible. and I've tried to get a hold of the Boise Linux user group but for some reason their web page won't let me in if you know someone in the group could you pass on my e-mail to them here it is wiskey2755@gmail.com thanks

If you're going to try Mint, I'd recommend Debian Edition, otherwise you may find that Mint is no different than Ubuntu. They start as equivalents, I believe Mint still is a derivative of Ubuntu. However Mint DE is obviously from Debian.

I'd live boot off a thumbstick to see if it can recognize the WIFI adapter.

Please also do not put your email within threads.

Edit: Note also that this adapter has some notes for Debian https://wiki.debian.org/ath5k

I've seen a lot of people like anti-x distro. And Void Linux distro. DistroWatch.com

A remote possibility: sudo killall wpa_supplicant

Hi...

I understand totally. I'd be willing to help you out if I lived nearby, however, I'm a few hundred hundred miles away. :)

I'm not sure what you mean. Try going here and using the email address list on that page (in the last paragraph.)

Awesome, I'm glad you got it working! Although, I did suggest you try an earlier version back in post #28. If you would, please mark this thread as "SOLVED" by clicking on "thread Tools" directly above your initial post. Thanks! :)
