Lubuntu 15.04 on Asus X5DC Help!
 

Hi Guys, total Linux newbie here :o, I was fed up of windows 7 slowing my Asus X5DC to a crawl so I made a bootable usb stick with Lubuntu 15.04. everything ran fine, so I installed Lubuntu but now I am stuck with 640x480 resolution, it's the only option I can't change it :-( please tell me there is either a way to add a driver or there is another better suited distro for my laptop?

Hi Chris,

it is true there is a general problem with SIS graphic drivers with the SiS 671 or 771 video card under linux in general. Ubuntu or Lubuntu is therefore a good choice (as they implement changes faster than in other distributions), aswell as linux mint, but you might have to go back to ubuntu 12.04 as mentioned in this article: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/sis. (sorry I'm not allowed to post an url in my first ever reply in the forum)

But that should not be a big setback especially because ubuntu 12.04 will still be supported until April 2017 as you can see in the ubuntu wikipedia article, whereas ubuntu 15.04 will only be short time supported until january 2016.

Also an ubuntu 12.04 should work well on your laptop with the normal gnome desktop environment. I'm sure it will still make a fine performance. But lubuntu 12.04 is not a long time service release. So you might consider installing ubuntu 12.04 and follow the steps in the article above.

I will give the link a try this weekend, been really busy this week, much appreciated, does anyone have the link to the program that makes a bootable usb installer from the iso as I can't find it again.

Just a quick note .....hope this can help someone else, when I first tried to boot from usb it didn't work, I had to go into the bios and disable quick boot, after re starting I was then able to boot from usb:-)

Before you proceed with the suggestions offered by MisterIX, make sure you have one of the graphic chips mentioned in the articles. Please open a terminal and post the results of the following command... ;)

Thanks guys, I found the unetbootin program again, I downloaded the Lubuntu 12.04 Iso and made the Bootable USB, I couldn't get it to work at first, but pressing esc as it was booting brought the usb boot options up (don't remember having to do that last time) Anyway now I have Lubuntu 12.04 installed and it is natively running in 1024x768, which has made me happy, but do I still need to follow the instructions for installing the two drivers and the xorg config file? or has this Iso been patched already, I am happy with the 1024x768 resolution but will I benefit from installing the drivers other than having better resolution?

I think the choice is really up to you but I highly doubt the .iso has been patched with the drivers already. I really couldn't say as to what benefits you might receive from installing the other drivers.
