The rumors of my demise are totally fictacious, LOL!
I'm back after spending a lot of time in Hospital. The doctors patched me up as well as they could.
I wonder about them, they made me drink Root Beer (Sasperilla Root) for a pain killer, I just bit a bullet instead. :D

I have an Oportunity to Learn. I've been told by those who know that if I want to run good ham radio
rig control programs, I should run Xbuntu 10.04. I wasn't able to find it, but did find Ubuntu 10.11, so I thought I took a 4 gig thumbdrive and put in on it.

I'm running a Dell 2400 with 256k of P-2700 RAM. Yeah, I should only attempt this more RAM and run at least 2 gigs of mattched 2700. When I tried, it loaded but ran at a snail's pace. I shut the computer down and it rebooted into Windows XP Home.
I checked the 120 gig hard drive and the thumb, but 11.10 was no where to be found. ??????

Now I'm not a whiz at this stuff, I want to make an ISO of Xbuntu 10.4 and run it instead, preferably on the hard drive, yet keep WINDOWS XP Home on the hard drive as well.

Anybody out there wanting to help me?

Hi, good to have you back.

The only difference between the normal Ubuntu and the Xubuntu is the Window Manager and the Desktop Enviroment they have. Ubuntu uses Unity (used to be GNOME), and Xubuntu uses XFCE. To customize your Ubuntu to have XFCE, just simply go to the Package Manager and find XFCE.

If you are talking about dual boot Windows and Xubuntu you need first reduce the volume in which Windows is installed to make room for Xubuntu. I think 30 or 40 GB for Xubuntu is plenty but it will depend on how much software you want to install in your Linux partition.
After you have reduced the Windows volume you should boot into windows just to make sure still boots and nothing has been broken at this point which by the way make a back up of all your files before you start messing with it.
During installation the installer tool will ask you where you want to install your new operating system select the partition you just created.

Here's what you need to do for an XP and Linux dual-boot:

1: Disable page file. Right click My Computer => Properties => Advanced => Performance: Settings => Advanced => Virtual memory: Change => check "No paging file" => click Set => OK => OK => OK

2: Reboot.

3: Defragment.

4: Resize. Use partitioning software on any live Linux CD or DVD. Leave unallocated space. Use actual installation CD or DVD to create and format Linux partitions.

5: Restore page file.

6: Restart with whatever distro, and proceed with the installation.

Well, I spoke to Red, yesterday about putting Xbuntu on this computer. I'm gonna have to make a CD boot disc to get the BIOS to accept Linux. Now, I just need to get some re-write CD's and call him back. Things are looking much better for me with getting linux.

Red lives in a bump-in-the-road place called Lodi, Texas. I've known him as a ham radio operator, but did not know he was an IT Specialist with his background in Linux. Now, I feel "blessed", LOL!

I first started out with binary, then assembly language, and Commadore BASIC, and DOS 1.0, LOL! Yes, I know what a command line is and I'll use it. I loved DOS 6.22, but was saddned that it was hampered buy it's built-in memory when WINDOWS came out. With Xbuntu, I can learn the commands and use the command line again. :-) I'm hoping I can find a relationalship database that will work in Xbuntu. If not, I have an old DOS
shareware program that will do almost everything I need. It's drawbacks are it doesn't search for duplicates and it doesn't print in Landscape mode.

Well, it's Lunch time. I hope I get a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, LOL! There's nothing better than a good PB&J anytime.
