Question LPR -P printing

I have setup a linux printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 8600) and it prints fine from OpenOffice.

However, I want to setup a script to print a PDF once every week to keep the ink from drying up. I want to set a cron job to do
lpr -P "HP_OfficeJet_8600" /my_path/my_pdf.pdf
Running this command from the shell does not work. I get about 10 pages of random characters. I've tried to use various PFD files, GIF files, JPEG, but they all seem to be doing the same thing.

The PDF I've tried print fine from xPDF.

Anybody have ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

back in the day you needed the cups-bsd package (not installed by default) to use the lp/lpr print options. And probably ghostview and stuff for hp printers. I think that changed recently or at least noticed something in the packages that removed the -bsd package. For debian sid at least.

For in browser I recently had to add the okular package to print pdfs from the browser. Otherwise I tend to save pdfs, convert them to postscript (a2ps), import them into the gimp, and then print them from gimp. But that's mostly for travel stuff that has a ton of ink waste if you don't edit them down to the criticals.
