Hi,

can I use lpr command to print to another file as the destination?

Yes, you can install the cups-pdf printer that creates a PDF file and saves to the destination location. It is possible to create a filter/dummy printer that will create a file in other formats but you have not provided any information. I know of no built in print to file feature.-
