Your study methods are likely different than others so no one is able to answer that in an absolute way. We can only make suggestions and I have no idea which is better for you.
You already have the books? Then study both and learn for yourself.
I have never bothered with exams, but I do find the various training manuals to be useful as a reference.
Therefore, what I'd suggest that you do now is to study both of them at the same time. Each one is likely to progress through the same topics, yet each one will present the material in a different way. Read both guide's treatments of the same material, then contrast and compare them.
There are some bad reviews about that book in kindle, but many others give it a 100% rating.
I am also trying for the LPIC-1 certification using that guide, and 'Linux Cookbook: Essential Skills for Linux Users and System & Network Administrators', to get my hands dirty.
