LPD in place of CUPS
 

I was tasked with moving a network printing solution off of Tru64 Unix onto Linux OEL 5.6. I have tried repeatedly to get CUPS to recognize my LPD settings but to no avail. The problem is that my queues are using 5 digit numbers. This worked fine on Unix because I specified an rm for each printer and that translated in the hosts file rather easily.

Long story short I am trying to remove CUPS from my system and go to an LPD printing solution. I uninstalled CUPS but am trying to figure out what to install to restore the base LPD commands/functionallity.

I think you are looking for the cups-lpd package. I think that is the package that allows cups to emulate lpd and should be in the standard OEL repo.

Thanks grim but I tried that and it didn't help at all. I am printing to a bunch of Windows boxes running WINLPD. From what I came across about the cups-lpd is that it seemed to want cups boxes running on the receiving end. The issue that appears to be the problem is the old LPD could have multiple aliases for the same printer, whereas cups only lets you get away with one.

So you are trying to print to windows printers that are expressed as LPD print queues. However, you have the same queue with multiple names?

Printing to an lpd/lpr print queue should be just choosing that type of printer in the cups interface, and it should work.
