Low modem download
 

Dear people,

I have a problem with my modem connection, KPPP tells me that I connect at 52000, but I looks that I never are able to get a data download rate higher then +/- 1kb.

I tested this with many websites, including some downloads from my own ISP, what normally gives a great download with my Windows 2000 computer.

I have a Micronet Shuttle 3000 external 56K modem, what connects with a serial RS-232 port. Micronet is to my know-how one of the manufacturers who is supporting Linux (www,micronet.com.tw change the comma) that is why I selected this relative expensive modem. (It was the most expensive modem offered to me)

My know-how about Linux is very limited; you can say that I’m very low on know-how. I hate to complain that the modem is not working right; as I’m not sure that this problem is related to a hardware failure.

I’m using Fedora Core 2 (Kernel 2.6.6-1.435.i686) on my second (old) computer what is installed on an Asus TUSI-M mainboard (SiS 630 chipset, Celeron socket 370, 1.3 Ghz, 256MB, latest “beta” BIOS).

Please check out your Service Provider.
It don't mean u buy 56 kbps modem and u should get the so mention speed. It total depends on the cable or dial up u are using with your modem.

If there is any other problem please let me know.

Check your serial port speed. Make sure it's greater than 56k (and not 9600) otherwise it'll be a bottleneck.

If I connect to my ISP with the same account with my Windows 2000 computer there is no problem with the connection speed. So I don’t think that the problem is with my ISP.

The speed of my serial port sounds to me as a more likely source of the problem, the only problem is that I have no idea how to check the speed of my serial port or to change this speed of my serial port speed.

Hello everybody,

With some testing I'm now more sure that my modem speed problems are related to my serial port speed.

I checked the port speed and all my serial port's are set to 9600, so now is my question how do I change this to a higher port speed?

KPPP -> Setup -> 'Device' tab -> Connection speed
It should probably be 115200

Hello everybody,

I solved the problem with my low modem data speed.

The first issue was that my serial port where set to 9600baud, I changed that to the maximum of 23400 with “setserial”. (Special thanks to AAA for pointing me to that direction)

Second I did some research on which chipset was used in my Micronet modem, MS Windows 2000 was able to tell me that my modem was based on the Lucent 56k Venus PnP chipset. After knowing this I searched on Internet for the correct modem init string.

I found that the init string used in KPPP was totally wrong and after changing this to the right information the modem worked correctly on full speed.

Hi, Dummy-in-Linux!

I have some trouble with my conceptronic serial modem, and think it should be caused by the same, the init string kppp sends.

Could you post the init string you are using, and where have you found it? I've been searching, but, maybe because I'm a really, really, really newbie, can´t find anything that helps me.

I'd need to know as well, where must I store this string in order to make kppp remember it for the next time.
