Loving Knoppix

I am using Knoppix 3.1 and I have a corrupt version of Windows XP. I tried to use Knoppix to drag and drop and copy and paste between drives (USB and HDA1) It told me that I basically couldn't do that. I checked the permissions, and I had full rwx. Could anyone please tell me why that was a problem?

By default, Knoppix mounts all drives in read-only mode. The Knoppix philosophy is to make it inherently difficult to accidentally mess anything up.

Also, Knoppix 3.1 is a rather old version of Knoppix, which I think doesn't include the ability write to NTFS partitions (Windows XP uses NTFS). The USB drive should be formatted in FAT, which Knoppix CAN write to--so you should be able to take files from your WinXP partition and copy them to the USB drive. However, you'll need to right click on the USB drive icon and change it from "read-only" mode to "read-write" mode.

I presume you are having trouble writing to your NTFS volume (not the USB drive…). Perhaps you need to use a more recent knoppix (5.xx) that has better NTFS read-write support (with ntfs-3g). How you are supposed to burn the CD without a working system: I don’t know (perhaps a friend’s comp?).

P.S.
