Lots of newbie questions, BEWARE!

Alright, you chose to view this post, and now you're gonna get what you asked for... :newbie:

I'd been a Microsoft Windows user for about 7 years, and I thought I knew a lot about the way computers ran... until I ran into Linux. Linux is GREAT, especially because of all of the GNU licensing and whatnot... but... now I'm having trouble finding programs that are compatible with the programs I used to have on Windows 98, such as GoldWave (audio editing tool)... And when I DO find something I think I like, I have the WORST time trying to install it... so, here are my list of questions. Please take a stab at any of them, I'm sure they'll all get answered... at least sometime in the next 5,000 years or so...

1. Anyone know of a very descriptive guide to installing programs onto Linux Mandrake 9.1?
2. Can anyone please tell me how the HECK I'm supposed to sift through the instructions of installing WinE?
3. Can anyone explain why Konquerer web browser is so buggy? and, does anyone have any recommendations on what I SHOULD use to browse the internet/dirs?
4. Does anyone know how to change the default program for execution of certain file types, such as .MP3 and folders?
5. Does anyone know of a good P2P file-sharing client??
6. Can anyone detail a good way of solving crashes instead of waiting for 15 minutes for the "KDE Crash Handler" to come up?

Alright, well, I suppose that's all for now. But you can guarantee that I'll be back shortly with more questions...

1. Mandrake comes with a lot of helpful information on its own..that start page for one....but if that's not enough, I HIGHLY recommend going to browse www.mandrakeuser.org
2. You have to read SOMETHING...even if *I* tell you, it'll become a list of instructions...the Wine HOwtos out there are fairly well written and well documented...I suggest www.frankscorner.org. I also recommend getting used to reading a bit of documentation one way or another if you want to be comfortable in linux. At least try.
3. Try Mozilla (it should be installed with Mandrake) or download Opera, both are solid and full featured.
4. default program? In what?
5. Gnutella, or lmule.
6. what do you mean by "solving crashes"?

3) I use mozilla, it works great

5) gtk-gnutella works great

6) Not sure what type of crashes you are talking about, but try running the xkill command then clicking on the program if that's what you mean.

Eeh, probaby should've been more specific on the crash question. When I run Konquerer a lot of times and Xmms sometimes, it will freeze for obscene amounts of time and either just stop or bring up the "KDE Crash Handler" window... I was wondering if there was any way of getting rid of the "freeze" quicker so I can move on and not have to wait on it to close... of course, I can run other programs while waiting on the freeze to do something, but it just gets cluttered and repetitive when I try to do anything with it being frozen... If not, it's fine, but my perfectionism gets the best of me... :D Also, when I say "default program", I mean, when a file is double-clicked, it will open a program that I have selected as the default for that file type, and not the default one that KDE or MDK has selected.

Ok..well if a proggy is frozen, I usually just use xkill (should be in your menu somewhere) and click on the offender...however I don't use Konq and Xmms has never crashed on me sooo...

As for default programs...well it depends on what you're using...I usually start my stuff either by starting the program and then getting the file (for example, I start XMMS and then select MP3s) but that's just me....I also am usually using the command line, so I don't use stuff like Konq or Nautilus.... so I can't really help you there except to tell you to go nuts and explore hehe :D

q1: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/cooker/urpmi.html

q2: urpmi wine

q3: http://mozilla.org/ just do a "urpmi mozilla"

q4: it should be sorta like in windows... "open with" or something. not sure. right click the file and check out the options. if you have mplayer for example then you'd tell your app that you want to open mp3s with /usr/bin/mplayer...

q5: http://www.limewire.org/ http://gtk-gnutella.sourceforge.net/

q6: if you are experiencing constant crashes it might be a symptom that something's not well... is your box updated? if you've already set your update sources (see q1) then a simple "urpmi --auto-select" will update your mandrake packages completely.

ps: you should categorize your questions and thread them individually... it's not right to post many different unrelated questions on one thread... in fact i think it goes against the website policies...

you can use this to help you find the linux "equivalents" for your windoze software:

good luck!

Sorry about the violation... will not happen again... just didn't want to burden the forums with all my questions in 13 different catagories... anywho, thanks for your replies...

The urpmi link to download the RPM doesn't work... anyone know of a mirror or an alternate link??

win32sux 09-17-2003 03:33 PM

ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/m...mdk.noarch.rpm

but mandy usually installs it by default, unless you do a super-minimal install... you sure you don't have it already?

Draconian992 09-17-2003 03:40 PM

Actually... lol nevermind. I'm an idiot... not to mention a newbie. :-D

Oh and another thing about URPMI...go here and it'll help set it up properly:

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/

Of course, this answer has been posted a LOT in the forums so a simple search on here (or on google/linux) would have found it...but you knew that right? ;)

Seriously tho...that link up there is the easiest way I've found to set up URPMI and make it work like a charm...it adds a bunch of sources beyond your CDs...
