Unhappy lost wine after updating video

I had wine working fine on mandrake 9.2 but i was stuck using vesa for my radeon card. Tried updating the kernel but buggered that up somehow and i was getting symlink errors trying to compile the ati source. So i do a fresh install of mandrake and get my video working fine, but now when i try to get wine working now the system locks up and my monitor seems like its going into power saving mode and i cant get out of it other than a reboot. It will do this when i try to do anything other than run the setup even copying files into my fake windows dir using wine tools. Any help to get this working again would be great.

Edit: I can't be sure since it happens too fast but it looks like im getting permission denied errors just before lockup.
