Lost Video w/BFG NVIDIA 6200 OC SUSE 10.3
 

I installed a BFG NVIDIA 6200 OC card on a system that has been previously working with SUSE 10.3. I re-installed it again and after installation is complete and just before I should be getting the KDE desktop, I loose all video.

Is this a compatible video card w/SUSE 10.3?
If so, what can I do to correct this matter?
I am new to Linux, how do you update or change drivers if you need to?
I have 512Mb of memory on this system, is it enough?

You need to reconfigure your xserver for your new video card. You can start with the generic vesa drivers, which should work but provide no 3D acceleration. You can then install nvidia-specific drivers after you have a GUI.

I'm not too familiar with suse, but I believe yast might have a command line tool you can use to do this. You need the equivalent of what dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg would do on a deb based system. On SUSE, I believe it is sax2.

What did you do?

Did you reinstall suse 10.3, or the nvidia driver and why? Did you install the nvidia driver from here?

I assume that the card is not defect. Have you tried it with any live-cds of the latest distros, openSUSE 11.0, Ubuntu 8.10, Fedora 10?

512MB of RAM will work, but a bit more would make everything
quicker, that is if it won't cost you too much money.

Is there any reason why you haven't installed openSUSE 11.1, not that an updated version of 10.3 shouldn't work.

The command

The command to reconfigure the video card is sax2 -r. You can look at man sax2.

However,I would preform the installation following nvidias instructions that I included as a link. In any case, good luck with the card. Others seem to have made it work.
