Lost user name and password for Ubuntu and can't access program

Hey guys this may be crazy but hope you will understand. I went Out of town for a month and had a friend work on my computers and install Ubuntu which he did. I have tried to access Ubuntu but my friend can't remember what password he used and I never knew it so I can't use the program at all. Does anyone know how I can get access to Ubuntu or change the user name & password? Please help!

Hope its not encrypted!

Assuming it's a normal install you could boot an Ubuntu disk in recovery mode do:

Code:

sudo username

then

Code:

passwd

and reset it
the recovery mode logs you in as root so *BE CAREFUL*
