Angry Lost soundcard recognization after switching to KDE from Gnome

I wanted to get a taste of the difference between Gnome and KDE Ubuntu so I downloaded and installed KDE. During the installation I got a pop up box telling me that KDE has determined I had some sound drivers that were not necessary and should I let the program uninstall these files. Like a total jacka$$ I said yes. After the installation was complete I had no sound. I switched back to Gnome, uninstalled KDE, and haven't had sound since. Sound is fine in my Windows 7 dual boot. I ran some commands in the terminal and found that the system isn't recognizing any soundcard. Please keep in mind I am a total Linux newbie but have a lot of experience on other OS's. Thanks for any help

KDE didn't remove your sound drivers. It simply removed entries in it's systemsettings for specific sound card devices that it wanted to use but were no longer available.

Bring up a terminal and run 'lsmod | grep snd' and 'lspci | grep -i audio' and show us the output.

Thank you both for your quick responses and your patience with my ignorance. I am using Ubuntu 10.04LTS. Here are the results you asked for:

john@john-desktop:~$ lsmod /grep snd
Usage: lsmod
john@john-desktop:~$ lspci /grep -i audio
Usage: lspci [<switches>]

Basic display modes:
-mm Produce machine-readable output (single -m for an obsolete format)
-t Show bus tree

Display options:
-v Be verbose (-vv for very verbose)
-k Show kernel drivers handling each device
-x Show hex-dump of the standard part of the config space
-xxx Show hex-dump of the whole config space (dangerous; root only)
-xxxx Show hex-dump of the 4096-byte extended config space (root only)
-b Bus-centric view (addresses and IRQ's as seen by the bus)
-D Always show domain numbers

Resolving of device ID's to names:
-n Show numeric ID's
-nn Show both textual and numeric ID's (names & numbers)
-q Query the PCI ID database for unknown ID's via DNS
-qq As above, but re-query locally cached entries
-Q Query the PCI ID database for all ID's via DNS

Selection of devices:
-s [[[[<domain>]:]<bus>]:][<slot>][.[<func>]] Show only devices in selected slots
-d [<vendor>]:[<device>] Show only devices with specified ID's

Other options:
-i <file> Use specified ID database instead of audio
-p <file> Look up kernel modules in a given file instead of default modules.pcimap
-M Enable `bus mapping' mode (dangerous; root only)

PCI access options:
-A <method> Use the specified PCI access method (see `-A help' for a list)
-O <par>=<val> Set PCI access parameter (see `-O help' for a list)
-G Enable PCI access debugging
-H <mode> Use direct hardware access (<mode> = 1 or 2)
-F <file> Read PCI configuration dump from a given file
john@john-desktop:~$

I hope this was what you were asking for. Thanks. John

Look at the command I gave you again:

lsmod | grep snd
lspci | grep -i audio

Neither of those has / in it.

For some reason, the High Definition Audio driver isn't getting loaded. Do you get any errors from 'sudo depmod -a && sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel'? If not, what's the output of 'aplay -l' after you do that?

To clarify, is this one command or two?

Those are two separate commands, but if you type them out that way (on one line, separated by &&), your computer will run the second immediately after the first one finishes (if the first command finishes successfully).

john@john-desktop:~$ sudo depmod -a
[sudo] password for john:
john@john-desktop:~$ sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-24-generic-pae/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
john@john-desktop:~$

Here is the error I got after the second command

Please use

tags around blocks of system output like that.

In any case, somehow your running kernel and sound modules got out of sync with each other. Not really sure how that would have happened unless it was an issue with Ubuntu packaging. You could try reinstalling the kernel package, reboot, and see if it helps. Other than that, I'm out of ideas. The Ubuntu forums might be able to give better guidance.
