Hi,

I have found and old Linux Mint box I was trying to learn Linux on a couple of years ago and now want to update it from 18 to 19.2

I can get into the Desktop but when I want to Update or do anything it asks for an Authentication pwd and I have tried every password I thought I would have used but none work.

I rebooted with shift to get to Grub then Esc then e but couldn't see where and what to change.

Any help please. I have a DVD of 19.2 which I guess I could just boot to and go over the previous but it seems a little unsophisticated way to do it.

Any help appreciated.

I would google "Linux Mint restore password".

In fact, I did that, and found this:

You can reset your password following the next steps:

Reboot your computer / Turn your computer on.
Hold down the Shift key at the start of the boot process to enable the GNU GRUB boot menu (if it does not show)
Press ESC at the GNU GRUB prompt.
Press e for edit.
Use the Arrow keys to highlight the line that begins with kernel and press the e key.
Go to the very end of the line and add rw init=/bin/bash
Press Enter and then press b to boot your system.
Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
Type in passwd yourusername
Set your new password.
Restart your system.

You're probably better off doing a fresh install, lots of changes in Buster, some Debian based distros didn't update cleanly, if I remember correctly.

Do as berndbausch suggests and then, if you have a separate home partition, you can preserve it when doing a fresh installation of Linux Mint 19.2:

Otherwise, backup any personal data from the LM 18 installation to an external drive before doing the new one.
