Unhappy Lost Panel Problem after installing Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Hello,
I upgraded to Hardy Heron from Gutsy on my laptop Acer Apsire 4351, using the Update manager. Not an issue at all until the next time I booted when I find that I have no panels, no application buttons etc. But I do have a couple of folders on my desktop which I have save various items, etc from the WWW , and one that has spreadsheet I was working on. From these I find I can launch FireFox, and or Open office, all systems seem to run fine, but it appears to this newbie that either my resolution has set itself to be a size that excludes panels or the wallpaper is covering panels. I have to <Ctrl-Alt-Backspace> to get to logon screen which has the box that allows for shut down etc. When I right click on the desktop I get the Change Display /wallpaper/theme box which should allow me to Launch an application, but it doesnt.
It is annoying to say the least. I have tried the following in terminal (which I had to access by reboot by method written above) booting into root to run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver -org' to no avail.Any suggestions? or will I need to reinstall?

Does Ctrl Alt + or Ctrl Alt - (minus) switch you to a better resolution?
