Lost Newbie - Please help with Internet Connection!
Hi there Gang,
I am glad I came upon this Website today, and hope you all can help me. I am a Windows Convert-to-be, working on building my first Linux system, and I seem to be stuck. Though I have followed the steps on the Ubuntu Website for connecting to the Internet via a dial-up modem, I seem to still be struggling with this challenge. I have already run ScanModem on my machine, and the ModemData.txt tells me that I have a VIA82XX-Modem, VIA8237. It also states PCI SLOT 00:11.6 PCI ID 1106:3068 SubsystemID 1543:4c21 Name Communcations Controller: Via Technologies, INC. AC'97 Modem Controller I understand that I need a driver for this modem, in order to make it operate and become visible to Ubuntu, yet I am struggling to locate that driver. I was hoping that there may be some kind souls here, that would be able to help me find the driver, and configure it to my machine. I am dying to use Linux as my primary operating system, I just need to learn how to use it as well as I know that "Other" one. Thanks in advance for your help. Orangestng Sorry Gang, forgot to add that I have installed the newest Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop Editon. |
If it's a WintelModem (software modem that uses the machines processor instead of having it's own) It probably wont work. Get an external modem with it's own processor and hook it to a com port and It'll work.
Otherwise google and see if the company is supporting Linux. Also look at Linux hardware compat list. Some manufactures support Linux. http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php/cat/121 |
Modem Driver
Hi,
Not all WinModems are unsupported in Linux. Those using Rockwell/Conexant chipsets have drivers, in fact I am currently browsing the net using such a modem Goto http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/g...em-drivers/hsf and download the file hsfmodem-7.68.00.18oem.tar.gz It doesn't matter if you are using something other than Ubuntu. The file contains a generic driver that has to be compiled. Unpack it and follow the given instructions. It might work for you. Post back if you need help. |
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the advice. I will see if the WinModem Download will work first, and if not I guess it will be time for a new modem. Thanks Again Orangestng |
