Question Lost in this Mandriva craziness...

ok i am pretty good with ubuntu but decided to install Mardriva to dual boot with ubutnu but i must say im almost totally lost

first of all of the mandriva website that i downloaded my .iso from it says 2008, but the readme on the .iso says spring 2007. 2.6.22.9-desktop586 is what uname -r brings up...what d i have 2008 of spring 2007?

second i HATE kde and well of course thats what is default. all the gnome package are installed except the task-gnome. this should not be a problem but i cant figure out how to add this cd that i installed from into the repositories to get the task-gnome package. how do i install rpm's from the cd? when i browse the cd i dont see any rpm's. The reason i need to install from the CD is because i also need to get wvdial so i can figure out my only internet connection (winmodem that i have working well in gusty but get errors in mandriva).

SO once again to to recap...

1. how do i install rpms form the mandriva one cd that i downloaded o thier site?

2. when version do i have?

thanks for the help, it a little frustrating that im so lost just because of kde and a new distro but what can i say.....i guess im just lost.

also one thing i have noticed is that information on how to do things in mandriva is much harder to find than gusty....any link would be great....thanks again!

The abbreviations make this pretty hard to read. Especially if english is not your native language, you should stick to spelling out words.

It's just called Mandriva 2008. Obviously it wasn't released in 2008. We don't have that kind of technology yet. So the release is from spring 2007.

I have never used Mandriva, but to install packages from a cd, you have to add the cd as installation source. You'll have to browse the Mandriva wiki for that.

If you want gnome, you sure can install gnome on Mandriva. Not that KDE works fundamentally different.

To find out what version you have, you can rin
Code:
$cat /etc/*-release
You could have saved yourself time and effort by downloadin the Mandriva One GNOME edition. As for adding more packages, go to easyurpmi and setup the various main, contrib, plf and updates repos for your version of Mandriva. After that look to task-gnome in the gui package manager (rpmdrake) or enter the commands
Code:
#urpmi task-gnome

GNOME has a lot of dependencies, so downloading it for one particular distro whilst using a different on is going to be really tough. Either sort out the network connection issue first and then install task-gnome from Mandriva or get the Mandriva One GNOME CD.
