lost groups

I am a member of five groups within our network environment, but sometime, one of our systems can only find the primary group I belong to resulting in, that I cannot use the tools I have put behind a specific group.

sometimes it gives:
$ groups
instead of
$ groups
meten1 agilib cictest verigy tcntest
I think it has to do with the portmapper, since it is dead everytime it occures.

$ /sbin/service portmap status
portmap dead but subsys locked
I checked the NIS settings and they are equal to the systems, on which I do not see this issue.

Does somebody know what to do about this?

How is authentication done on these systems? Are you using LDAP for user and groups across the network? My first thought would be the machine where you are only part of one group is either not part of the same setup or the groups were not created locally if it's done in such ways.

More details get better responses.

The groups are not created locally, they are created on a NIS server. When executing "ypcat group | grep -i schuurs", all the groups user 'schuurs' belongs to, are shown.

The authentication is as follows:
tab "user information" ==> NIS
==> NIS domain -> nis
==> NIS server -> localhost

tab "Authentication" ==> nothing enabled

tab "options" ==> cache user information
use shadow passwords
