Lost everything after uninstalling getty
Hi all,
I think that I am in a bit of trouble. I have (had) a multi-talented server running Fedora Core 5. It is being used in a small business for everything from smb to Apache to MySQL.
The other day my boss wanted me to add one more task to this server, fax server, (a.k.a. mgetty-sendfax). I found that it was partly installed but I wanted to start from scratch. I used the Add/Remove software tool in Gnome and without thinking twice, agreed to also removing dependent packages. Now I am left with almost nothing.
I have no smb, no MySQL, and to make things worse I have no compilers. I tried everything I could in my limited kb, but no luck.
Is there anything I can do other from a full rebuild?

Restore from backup, if you do not have one consider this a lesson learned. Any server system should have a tested verified working backup this is consider a standard in a business setting.

I do have a data backup, and a copy of most config files. Just not a full system state backup.
Is there any reason why such a thing would happen?

You agreed to also removing dependent packages. Always think and if not 100% sure go old school and check to be sure;
Code:
$ rpm -e --test mingetty
error: Failed dependencies:
mingetty is needed by (installed) initscripts-8.54-EL.1.x86_64
I'll leave it to you to see what the output from the typed command: rpm -e --test initscripts
warning it is not pretty, but it will give you an understanding of why this happened.
