There is no such version as MySQL 5.3 - it
jumped from 5.1 to 5.5, and neither of those are still maintained.
And if this is a MySQL issue, the
full version number is even more relevant.

Are you saying everything had been working fine, then something changed and it stopped working?
If so, and you didn't make that change, check relevant log files for clues as to what it might have been.
