Loss of volume control

probably a simple one (not me, the problem!!!)

Does anyone know why i cannot adjust the volume anymore
by using the speaker icon on the top task pane? the drop down
slider is still moving but the output sound doesn't change.
the volume control within rythmbox music player still works
many thanks

You are running ubuntu, so you are probably using the gnome desktop (you should be telling us this).

I use KDE, but I can R-click on my speaker icon and choose "Select Master Channel".
Selecting "Front" or "Master" generally works for me. YMMV

Maybe try a "Mixer" option if it is offered. Experiment, or provide more detail.
