Loosing wifi connection
 

Hi all,
Installed and ran succesfully Suse 9.3 on my Toshiba satellite. Great product, loving it.
I have few minor problems but I'm working on them. For now, my biggest prob is that the system drops my wireless connection few times/day. Have centrino 1.7Meg. Any help welcome.

Are you using a dynamic IP?
Do you have a dhcp client running?

Maybe it's a problem because of this. Can you be more specific?

I have no static IP. Running DHCP. My wireless modem is an AirportExtreme Base Station (Mac) and I have no WAP-PSK or WEP running on the base station.
My Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L10, Centrino 1.7MHzCPU, 512 RAM, 60GB HDD. Maybe a centrino issue?

I wouldn't say a centrino issue, but something 'bugging' the hardware. Maybe when your IP changes, the dhcp client doesn't recognize and keeps the same IP, making you lose your connection. Have you tried different dhcp clients? Is your wireless connection fully supported by SuSE? If not, maybe you need some different drivers.

Devito is right. You could try to assign a static IP to your machine.

Devito: I dont know how to change DHCP clients or if the router is compatible with SUSE. Any help on how to findout all these is very welcome.
Anti.corp: trying to assign a fix IP? Is this something I can do or is this something my ISP provider should do for me?

hi, i am a complete newbie at linux, but support a wireless network on a windows domain, so i think you should check these things as well as they are generic issues for wireless networks.

do you have the same issue with other wireless devices, another laptop, it could then be the access point that has the issue.
so then you need to check things like, channel. if you are broadcasting on the same channel as a neighbour then the centrino lappy will get confused and may drop the signal, plus you may be getting data errors.

have you got bluetooth switched on if you have it this can cause you issues with connection sometimes.

i am making some guesses here, like that you are at home etc.

does you access point have a switch built in, if so if you connect via a cable (i know its a different card) do you have any issues with connections? if yes then it may be the distro, if not then it is more liklly the wifi setup.

sorry its a bit disjointed, i thought of stuff as people were talking to me.

the one issue i have is that i don't know the linux side and although i have a book telling me how to setup a wifi connection under linux i have not done it yet.

Channel is in automatic, I have 3 other lapps on this wifi network and they all losing the conncetion. Any idea on hwo to use a static IP? I do have the impression that the DHCP server is the problem here.
