At the prompt type "ls -l /path/to/file/newfile"

It will tell you what the permissions are, when you run it you'll see something like...

ls -l /home/user/newfile
-rwxrw-r-- 1 craigh craigh 0 Oct 16 09:58 /home/user/newfile

Hope this helps
