Looking to install Linux from CDROM while other Linux distro is running

Laptop has broken internal CDROM. I booted with floppy to get Puppy 431 installed from USB stick. Now I have USB CDROM access thru Puppy. I can mount and see the CD fine.

Is it possible to boot or install from a currently installed linux distro (Puppy)?

I have a second free partition ext2 available, sda2, and GRUB is working fine for me on boot.

(machine also doesn't have boot from USB option, yes, it's old, a project I am working on, I have Nimblex in CD now, I think it's a live cd, I would like to try a few different ones by installing to sda2 and wiping if ng.)

whats up dude?

you need Plop bootmanager
it boots usb's, usb-cdrom's etc on PC's with no bios support for usb boot

I include it in almost all my downloads

I tried PLOP, it found my USB CDROM but was not able to boot from it. I was able to boot from USB FLASH tho and that helped. Then only distro I was able to load up on the old amd was slitaz, which is missing stuff. It's very small and didn't have install working.

Puppy still the only complete linux that runs on it. DSL boots but screen is all green and can't be read.

PLOP is good utility tho.

this is my insane laptop project I can't let go of, it's old.

AMD K6-2 3D, 366mhz, 163mb ram, busted internal cdrom drive that I can't fix, one usb port, one pcmcia port, a floppy drive, the best keyboard and mouse that I really like, so I'm not giving it up. I'd rather wear this kbd out and save the better laptops I have rather than pounding on them. This thing is a beast, I can take it to the cafe, not have to watch it. Got it in 2000 for $1,000. Still has the sticker, 'built for windows 98'

my external cd/dvd is an old busted memorex usb case with a liteon drive since the memorex died, of course.

I did get DSL going, see other post. but I need to figure out how to get a module on sda2 so i can incorporate it into dsl when i want to use the usb nic - ralink wireless. but not tonight, it's late i been at this all day again.

What you may end up doing is noted in Knoppix documentation on how they install from a live cd.

Since you have a floppy might try GPXE and boot to a tftp, nfs or http mounted distro maybe if pxe is not a bootable option.
