Looking for Orientation Online
 

Hi

Lame newbie question follows - please send flames to . . . .

I have just installed Linux and I think it is called Red Hat (although I have a strong suspicion that the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive) and I am looking for some basic orientation online.

I have been Windows-based for years with a fair amount of technical experience and can find my way round one of Bill's OS's with my eyes closed.

Today I can't even find my floppy drive!

All I really need to know is 'Where do I start?'

TLDP has a lot of HOWTOS to get you started. Also, Google For Linux.

These 2 cmds will give you some information on your system:

uname -a

cat /etc/issue

As for 'where do I start?', you need to ask specific qns if you want useful answers :) ... but try these links:

Hi

The best way, i find to start off is to get a book and follow whatever is written whether it be the process of installation or any other issue. it is just a matter of time till u get accustomed with the new environment. Well the book where i started was "Red Hat Linux Bible". u only learn by reading. There is no alternative to reading books. But still u have problems , u can post ur problems here & i 'm sure u would be answered, but u need to be specific while asking.

Thanks guys. I have found half a dozen e-books, including the Red Hat Bible and am working my way through them bit by bit.

I have learned how to go from the Red Hat GUI into what looks like the CLI screen. My next step is finding out how to get back to the GUI again and how to get out of the man <i>[keyword]</i> pages.

i think u have logged in through text mode. and now u want to go back to gui. type "startx" and press enter. this will work for u.

to get out of man pages, type q after the colon u see at the bottom.
