Looking for files

My Lenovo 3000 with vista notebook crashed and I am using ubuntu to recover lost files. I was able to see them with knoppix, but it wouldn't read my external hard drive. Now ubuntu can read my external drives but I can't see the files from the hard drive. Search did not find them. How can I find them?

Try SystemRescueCD from here.
I hope it can do the both.

Arijit,

This is a very useful little piece of software. It's much better than any other version I've seen up to now. Thanks for pointing it out.

Before I need it in anger, I'm just wondering about two details. First, will it actually restore the Windows MBR? It's the first Linux tool I've found that seems to offer that service.

More important. Using the CD I have access to all of my Hard Disk data except for that stored in my Fedora LVM structure. Do you know of a tool that would let me get at that in an emergency?

John
