Looking for a very basic HOWTO on setting up a web server
Hey all,

While I use UNIX on a daily basis at work, I am very much a newbie to any kind of UNIX/LINUX system administration. Can any of you point me toward a HOWTO on setting up a webserver that includes how to set up permissions on /var/www/html.

Edit: I just want to let you all know that I already have apache installed on my Fedora Core 2 box.

Thanks in advance

Apache pretty much runs out of the box, is there anything specific that you're trying to achieve?

Yeah, I'm very curious about the permissions I need to set on the /var/www/html directory. I want to allow a non-root user to be able to write to this area.

Out of the box, it's owned by root:root with 755 permissions. Do I need to set up a new group making both root and another user part of that group and make the permissions 775?

the way numbered permissions go is [user][group][everybody else]
if you made it 775, you'd have to make whomever you wanted to have write access to it a member of apache's group

That'll depend on how the user is going to access that directory, if the user has shell or ftp login then the user or his group needs to have write permission to the directory, so yeah what you said would be correct.

My intent is to make root have as little part in non-administration issues as is possible. Even if I am the only one who will be accessing this box, I would rather be editing, creating, deleting, etc. files with another userid than root (whatever that username may be).
