Hmmm, ... looks like sed has a memory leak when running that script. For my particular test file it stops producing output after 764 lines, at which point the Resident Set Size for the process has ballooned to 1.9GB and keeps on growing. It's not apparent what in the script (that I still haven't fully deciphered) might be causing that.
