looking for a graceful-shutdown timer for gnome

I usually have music or a movie running when I go to sleep. I've always just used the time argument of 'shutdown' to do this... The good thing is it kills everything that moves and powers off the pc reliably. But a lot of times when I boot up again, the maximum resolution is set to 1024x768. It's not all that bad... I can just kill x at the login screen (ctrl-alt-backspace), and it's back to normal. But I was wondering if there is a nicer solution. When I use the shutdown button in gnome I never get that.

Do you not have a system shutdown script. I don't know about Ubuntu, but in Gentoo, there is a /etc/conf.d/local.stop file which is a list of user defined commands to run upon shutdown. Perhaps your system has something similar?

nope... I don't even have a /etc/conf.d directory

from the gnome terminal (Applications - Accessoirs - Gnome Terminal)
or alt-f2 'gnome-terminal'

type:

or

$ sudo shutdown -h 90

for 90 minutes
