Login Screen background in RH 7.2
 

I have a weird queston

I just did a fresh install of RH 7.2 I am coming from RH 7.1 and I use to change the backgrounds on my login screen in 7.1 but now that I am using 7.2 my background shows for a sec. then the redhat logo and blue background take over.

How do I get rid of the redhat logo and have my background show up

You see this is why Linux will never be better then windows.

Theres just not enough information out there to ever get something fixed right

I could have had this problem in windows solved in a mater of hours and this stupid bug has been bothering me for 3 weeks

so I try to post on the forums and I don't even get an I don't know. I just get blank air.

I really think Linux has a few years to go before it will be a usable OS. I am really trying to give it a chance but its aggravating to have to go in to windows just to make it work.

If thats the case then why not use windows. I here allot of people tell me that everything about linux is better but all I have seen so far is that its very hard finding any software that is even close to as usable as windows. Little problems can be fixed quicker just reloading it rather then trying to find data on the internet. and out of all the recourses the net has nothing is usefull for people that relay want to learn.

well I figured it out on my own

just take these lines out of the

/ect/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0-

# only set the background if the xsri program is installed
if [ -x /usr/bin/xsri -a -f /etc/X11/xsrirc ]; then
/usr/bin/xsri --redhat-login --set
fi

I agree with Vdub. I have never in my life had this much problem getting something configured. In Windows, at least when when you install it will boot up and then you can screw it up from there. I have Red Hat 7.2 and Mandrake 8.1.... along with Windows XP, and Windows ME. Heck, even the Windows 95b version shows great improvement of ease of use over either of these Linux software programs. If I were building code, or compiling, etc.. then I can see that Linux does have some advantages. But when it comes to networking??? Windows XP has multi task, multi user, firewalls, the Windows 2000 kernel, Control panel to configure or set up what you want. on and on...

So I go to the store and buy a piece of sofware for 39.00. It has been tested and it works in the OS that it's compatible with.. no hassels.. I get free software with Linux.. and spend literally hours just figuring out how to get the thing to install. then let alone if it works with this kernel!

I want to use both the Red Hat and Mandrake Linux systems.. I really do.. I just want to enjoy myself while I'm using them. I don't think my time should be spent installing, removing.. installing ..removing.. installing the same OS over and over again to get something right.. If you're a geek, then maybe you enjoy tinkering with code.. I do not.

Right now, when I boot up Dead Hat 7.2 I see the screen (background for a little bit then it turns blue.. mouse works. *S* Keyboard doesn't, but the mouse moves.. maybe I can spin the mouse around enough to amuse myself. What gives with the blue screen???? only way to get rid of it is to shut down the computer.. not good in Lie nux.. Why don't they write the distribution so as it can be installed safely, without much fanfare, and work!??? At least with XP in Windows, I can set a restore point and mess around, and always go back to that point in time if things go awry.

mandrakes is not much better.. have spent countless hours trying to get it to work as well.. it resides on the CD's now in the box I bought..

Yes... I know.. I'm a griper.. but COME ON! If Microsoft put out a release like this thing.. they would go in the sink. Users want sofware that usable..am I right??

What real advantage can Linux have over a system running XP at 1.667 GHz? speed??? I dont think you can worry about speed on a system that fast.. features?? where are they?? when do they work?? Adaptability?? When was the last time You walked into a store and found some packaged sofware there for Linux, other than another "distribution" of Linux OS??

Well, first thing I have to say to both of you is, this, if you don't like Linux, then don't use it. It's as plain and simple as that. You say you don't see bundled software for Linux in stores? Why would you need bundled software when there are so many usable and *in my opinion* superior programs available right on the distro CDs?? And you can download many more programs off the internet-get this, FOR FREE!! (can you download *legally* full version software for windows that is useful??)) This is open source, it isn't for casual users that expect to have everything laid out in front of them in some kind of a manual. It's alternative computing, there isn't going to be alot of big name supporters for Linux for at least a few years, but my experience with RH 7.2 and Slackware 8.0 is that Linux is ready for a desktop market. People just need to chill and take some time to learn! :study: You don't have to be a geek to use it either. Red Hat makes installation so simple all you have to do is click ok, next, and finish to install a very usable and very stable system in the matter of an hour or so. There are things that obviously need to be worked out like hardware compatability, but those things will come along in due time.

Linux gives you the "freedom " to explore, which MS does not, U have the oppurtunity to find out
why things do not work, this forum is for that, I too had the same problem with the RH background screen, I just
installed RH 7.2 abt 2 weeks ago and I am finding a lot of things changed, things that were working fine in 7.1 donot seem or work with 7.2 version, I can understand your frustation

If finding out answers for problems is a waste of time for you I suggest you stay with MS-windows, at least for
LINUX there are forums such as this where you can present your problems, is there any such for MS which is free
