Login says new mail, but pine disagrees

When I *log in* as root on the my FreeBSD box, it says that I have new mail, but when I go into pine, it shows no new messages. When I log in as my user, and su, I do not get the "new mail" message.

Any ideas why this would happen?

which mailbox is pine looking at?
off the top of my head, if you haven't set up a local delivery agent, i would think root's mail would be delivered to /var/spool/mail/root or /var/mail/root (not sure of the difference between those two *noob*)

if you haven't checked root's mail before it's probably just a "welcome to FreeBSD" message or something like that.

No no. I check root email all the time (I get security email stuff from the system and everything). I just don't know why it's saying that I have mail right now, but then when I log into pine, it doesn't show anything.
