Question login problem (Xauthority)

hi, i'm a linux newby...installed ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS on my older MAcBook Pro 6.2 (p4, i7). It was working well for a while. Now i can't log in.

I get the first screen asking for my p/w. I then get a blank screen - no desktop. I can login (alt ->), and get the desktop if i change to a super user (sudo -s / startx).

When i try and add lightdm (https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...w-can-i-fix-it), i get the message:

E: you don't have enough free space in /var/cache/apt/archives/

help!

This is a near-duplicate of this thread. I suggest continuing there, and closing here.
