Login problem

Greetings...
I recently installed Fedora 8 on an older PC. It had to use the
text mode because of little memory (128)
So I got it installed but then it asked me to login... and I did not know what to type in there.
I know it asked me to chose a password but it never asked me for an ID.. So I tried quite a few things but nothing seemed to work...
So I gave up on FEDORA 8 and re-installed DEBIAN which works fine and much easier to install on my old Pentium III...
I really like DEBIAN... at least the ease at which it installs...
I also have OPEN SUSE 11.1 on my new computer but do not like it as much as version 10.3
I am thinking to zero it out and go back to 10.3 because I had it working quite nicely...
OK... hope I have not been to long here.... THANX....

Did it perhaps ask you to set the "root password", ie the password for the root account? because then the user would be root what I think anaconda(sp) does by standard so I assume this is probably what happened....

Anyway other then that was their any point to this post? or any other queries.

One thing to remember is that you need to create a regular (non-root) user, and use that for the majority of your time on the computer; the root account has complete control over your system and it is very, very easy to mis-type a command that will disable or cripple its functionality. Unless you are sure you need to be root, stay as a regular user. Try the command `man useradd` for more information on creating users.

Thanks for your help..
Yes, I believe that is what happened...
I should have thought of that...type root for the Login id..
Ok.. that is great...
And the other tip was helpful too... I will do that from now on...create a second user account to do my experimenting on...
Thanx a bunch to both guys for both answers...it all is very interesting but takes
a lot of patience.... CHOW for now.... Blackpoopie
Do not complain about that which you allow..... later
