just bought Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G with Linux OS. I am stuck at root@localhost ~]#.What command should I put to progress into GUI?

This depends on the Linux distribution installed on this PC and the GUI that was configured. Are you sure it has a GUI at all?

In addition to that, you should never log in to a graphical environment with root. Better to create an unprivileged user first then use that user to login.

If you were shopping for a computer with a GUI operating system, you got scammed. Acer has been pulling this **** for a decade.

I recommend to return it and purchase the version with Windows preinstalled.

Linpus has a very bad reputation in this forum!:tisk: However if you are interested in proceeding and don't mind getting your hands dirty, it is possible to get from where you currently are to where you would like to be, and you would learn a lot about Linux in the process. Most newbies haven't the energy to go through all that though.

Another possibility is to create a user account for yourself, get online (assuming that you have a command line browser like links installed, which you probably do have) and download a more user-friendly form of Linux such as Mint, which you can then install and use.

That's a lie, it's not a scam, it's a whitebox equivilant. It's a proof it runs on the Linux Kernel, and a good .config file to go with it. Besides, you can expand Linpus to a full distro if you have the skills/knowledge.

Most people will just install another distro instead. Acer has realized their poor approach to GNU/Linux and has changed their approach and added endless OS, a full distro to their "linux computers" instead of Linpus.

The only thing that they might have done to mislead people, is to mislead them into thinking Linpus is what "linux" is. But it is ofcourse not, it's just a very poor distro with no GUI and a lack of software.

So please stop spreading your propaganda in every acer/linpus thread @Snowpine, it's not appropriate for the forum.

Sadly Linpus is not a full GNU/Linux distro. If you want to make it into a full distro, try following my advise in this post:

Most likely you cannot, or it seems overwhelming, but don't panick. What you need to do and should do is, as has been said by someone else already, to install a better GNU/Linux distribution.

He suggested Linux Mint, a good suggestion. I would suggest a couple of other alternatives, which I think are better in general, but also better for new users:

In all cases except if you extend your Linupus into a proper "distro" by following the steps in the link I gave, you will need either a USB disk (HD or stick) or a burnable CD/DVD. You then need to download your distro of choice and put it on one of these mediums.

Then you can proceed to install it on your computer.

Thank you.. Also, please keep in mind that I myself have saved money by buying these kind of machines. It might not be the same in all countries or all shops, but where I bought my last 2 laptops with Linpus (damn excellent machines) I saved about €80 for the one with a Windows equivilant. And the other one had a Windows version at the same price, but with lesser (cheaper) hardware.

I'm pretty sure you ALWAYS save money by buying a "Linux" Acer. But you are right, this choice works best for informed users. But it is a GOOD choice. I look around when I shop, and I saw this price difference with many laptops, not only the 2 I bought. And also characteristically of the "Linux" Acer machines is that they had a way above average hardware choice (including build/weight and battery) for that price class.

So, also forgive me for taking offence by your posturing and getting a bit angry.
