Unhappy Login GUI fails to appear on startup in Fedora 13 (stalls with the f/infinity symbol)

Hiya,

On startup my machine (a PC a few years old with recent Fedora 13 clean install) seems to be OK until it tries to get to the Login GUI, where it stalls at the f/infinity Fedora logo. The last things I did before shutting down my computer last were uninstalling the mail client Evolution via the GUI package manager and downloading a torrent. Could these have effected such a stuff up? I'm not altogether clear on logging in via a terminal.

Cheers,
Berwhale

uninstalling Evolution mostlikely uninstalled Gnome
it would have uninstalled about 250 packages

next time you might want to use the terminal and DO NOT use the y tag

in the gui it might not have shown the dependencies that also were uninstalled ( or it did in a pop up and you missed it).

use the install dvd in rescue mode and reinstall Evolution and gnome.

Thanks for that. I'll give the rescue mode a shot - I wasn't keen on another clean install. I'll reply again once sorted.

Hi again. I tried the DVD in rescue mode but I'm not sure I quite followed what it did or what it might have supposed to have done. I did get a shell at one point so I perhaps naively tried yum install evolution and likewise with gnome, but yum was not a recognised command. Anyway, I restarted the system and it got hung up when going through the startup process. I think it was when it tried starting "local". I tried the whole process again, this time entering in the shell the suggested "chroot /mnt/sysimage" and restarted. It went through the list of processes it was starting then got to the same point as earlier with the f/infinity fedora logo and stopped.

Again, I'm a computer/linux user in the sense that I'm fine when it works or even slightly goes wrong but in this case I'm a bit lost.

Cheers,
Berwhale

Hi,

Problem fixed. Managed to reinstall both Evolution and Gnome. Now, however VLC media player doesn't work. Tried un- and re-installing but to no avail. Still, not critical.

Cheers
