Login as root in OpenSuSE 11.3-KDE and Ubuntu 11.04-Gnome

I am running OpenSuSE 11.3 on a Dell D810 laptop as a platform for the GNS3 network simulator. I am new to Linux and GNS3. When I attempt to connect to a real switch (Cisco 2950) through a GNS3 cloud, I get "206-unable to create Linux raw ethernet NIO". The port configuration instructions specify "Linux Ethernet NIO (requires root access)". How do I run a complete Linux session as root including all GUI based programs -specifically the GNS3 GUI?

I am attempting the same with Ubuntu 11.04.

Actually the best option is to NOT login as root because any number of mistakes could potentially damage your system a lot. Use sudo for terminal actions, and gksu to open graphical apps from terminal with root privileges. gksu works on GNOME, but I don't know how to do the equivalent in KDE, although that shouldn't be too hard.

I actually believe the root account in Ubuntu is disabled by default, so sudo and gksu are your best choice there.
