login and password when run pclinuxos from live cd

hi. sorry, but I'm a dummy when it comes to linux. i have a toshiba satellite p100 227, and i tried to run linuxpcos from livecd. i tried ubuntu, and i have no sound, and i don't know how to install programs like beryl, or other programs in ubuntu. so i tried linux pcos, but it asks me for login and password, when trying to run from cd. what should i put for login and password? i have not created any user, or password. i tried to put 'root' as login, and then it asks for password. ????
thanks a lot.

Try user "root" with password "root".

From their (poorly organized) wiki.... http://docs.pclinuxos.com/LiveCD_trying

password for guest is "guest", and for root it is (you guessed it!!) "root".

If you will look at the top left of your screen I believe it will tell you
User name: guest password: guest
User name: root password: root

Don't feel bad, I've been there myself..

You've got two threads going on this--I'll suggest they be merged, since both have replies.

A live CD is supposed to come up in graphical mode (unless maybe they figured that "root" would want to do maintenance or something). Try logging in as "guest".

I just ran my PCLOS CD--at the beginning, there is a choice of several options, including two "video-safe" modes. Try one of these. What I suspect is happening is that the X-Windows system has an issue with your video card / monitor and thus can't start. When doing the actual install, there will be more options for how to set it all up.

Also look at the documentation link I gave you (in the other thread?)

thanks guys, i finally managed to reach the desktop, using the safe video option. still no sound, and problems with the video card as well. so ubuntu might be an option for me, maybe a release compatible with satellite p100 227. or is there anything i could do to have sound in ubuntu? or i'm doomed to vista?
thanks again.

All these problems can be fixed in just about any of the popular distros. Pick one a stay with it for a while.

For example, when you actually install PCLOS, you should have some options for setting up video card, etc.

Getting sound might simply mean adding yourself to the "audio" group--In the GUI, this would be in something like "users and groups". In a terminal:
usermod -G audio -a username

I have moved this version of the thread to Newbie and requested it be merged with your other thread.
